Obituary for John Henry Carroll

A Celebration of Life Service for John Henry Carroll, 71, of Natchez, Mississippi, formerly of Ferriday, Louisiana, was held Sunday, February 13, 2022, at Young's Funeral Home in Ferriday, Louisiana. The service was officiated by Rev. Arlie Rowley.

John Henry Carroll was born June 23, 1950 in Wisner, Louisiana to Mack Veller Carroll and Alice Fay Roberts Carroll and passed away February 6, 2022 in Monroe, La.

He was known by his friends and family as John Henry, John, or “Brother”. He finished high school at Ferriday High before being drafted into the U.S. Army. John Henry went to basic training at Fort Sam Houston. He trained as a combat medic and was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He took great pride in being a Veteran. Upon discharge, he moved home and completed two years of wielding at Concordia Trade School. After trade school, he worked many years in the oil industry before going to work at International Paper. John worked as a control room operator at IP until he retired.

Every day was a good day for John Henry if he was fishing, hunting, or running around with his buddies. Countless days were spent in the woods or on a boat with his brothers and friends. John loved his hunting trips to Ohio, Colorado, and Texas, where he got his “prized Deer” and made many good memories.

He was never at a loss for a good story about growing up in Ferriday, and the survival skills that came with growing up in the country. John Henry loved to reminisce about his younger years, playing with his brothers and sisters, and his Mama’s famous rolls and cooking.

His love of Ole Miss is still a mystery to most of his family and friends. As a loyal fan, he cheered them on in every sport and wore his Ole Miss cap daily. John Henry never backed down from a good debate, no matter what the topic was, politics, hunting, the right way to make chili, or plant a garden.

In recent years, John Henry was the happiest to be at home with Nellie. Together, they enjoyed life working in their garden, cooking, watching deer and playing with their dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack Veller Carroll and Alice Fay Roberts Carroll.

John Henry is survived by his life partner, Nellie Snowden of Natchez; sister, Mary Carroll Murphy and her husband, Mike Murphy of Crestview; brother, Veller Ray Carroll of Ridgecrest; sister, Martha Gay Carroll of Ferriday; brother, Frankie D. Carroll and his wife, Wanda Carroll of Ferriday; brother, Mark Carroll and his wife, Terri Carroll of Ferriday; brother, Chad Brandon Carroll of Ferriday and 4 grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will dearly miss him.
