Obituary
Leona M. “Pug” Hackney Guice, 85, of Sicily Island, LA passed away September 3, 2020 at Plantation Manor Nursing Home in Winnsboro, LA. The funeral will be held on Monday, September 7th at Pine Hill Baptist Church with Brother Clois Cole, Reverend John L. Lewis, and Bro. Harold “Bubba” Tucker officiating. Music will be provided by Susanne Delhoste, Cindi Lofton, Bro. Jon Lord, and Susan Cooper. Interment will follow the funeral at New Pine Hill Cemetery, in Sicily Island, LA, Services are under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Ferriday, LA. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 on Monday, Sept. 7th with Services beginning at 1:00 PM.
“Pug,” ( a name given to her by her father) was born in Harrisonburg, LA on August 9, 1935. She was a graduate of the Harrisonburg High School Class of 1953. She met and later married Loma Guice on April 12, 1955 with the Reverand J. O. McNair of Jonesville performing the church parsonage ceremony. The young couple later moved to Sicily Island and reared two children, Loma DeWayne and Elizabeth Susanne. Her third pregnancy and death of a still-born girl nearly claimed “Pug’s” life in 1961. During that time, medical science was not as progressed as it is today. Times were hard and “Pug” was in the garden picking butter beans when she felt something happen to her body. That uncomfortable feeling resulted in the death of her unborn baby. She carried the baby for three more days causing toxins to set up in her body. These toxins claimed the life of her third child, but almost claimed her life as well. Loma said this "changed Pug forever!" After rearing her two children to become school - age, “Pug” earned certification as a Nurses Assistant. She always had a love and respect for the field of medicine and acquired employment with the newly built Catahoula Parish Hospital. It was there that she met a young physician, Dr. W. C. Coney. Dr. Coney was beginning a practice in Jonesville in the early seventies. She was hired by Doctor Coney as his "first office nurse." She later continued her calling of helping others while working as "Activities Director" with Rosalie Home. Her employments with Dr. Coney and Riverland Medical Center were some of the happiest moments in her life. While at Riverland, she was an Emergency Room Nurse and then later became Director of Housekeeping. Pug was described as someone who could diagnose a patient before the Dr. She took pride in that talent and would receive late night phone calls from friends and family seeking a non-professional diagnosis. She treasured her time with Medical Professionals such as Dr. Coney of Jonesville and Dr. Greg of Ferriday. She had a serious concern for healthcare for the residents Catahoula Parish. As a result of that concern, she served many years as a volunteer on the Catahoula Parish Hospital Board.
Pug’s straightforward countenance, love of sports, music, and family were characteristics that many friends and family will remember. She was not afraid to take a stand for what she felt was right and would defend the underdog many times. You could often hear her screaming from the stands as to what she felt was a bad call to her beloved Sicily Island Tigers. In her mind, the Tigers never made a bad play and one knew not to share with her if they had a different opinion. Although it was not her passion, she was an excellent cook and would many times prepare and deliver plates during the holidays. She enjoyed making Christmas candy, cakes and pies each year. Her dining table was filled with more than enough for her family and remains were shared within the community. It was then that she would fill plates for Loma to deliver to the lonely. Pug was an excellent pianist who “played primarily by ear.” She didn’t like the hot weather and during the Louisiana heat spells she would be found “under the air conditioner” taking a nap, talking on the phone with friends, playing the piano, or sitting in the pool.
Pug was diagnosed with dementia in 2019. It quickly took a toll on her as she lost over a hundred pounds in less than an 18- month period. Her quick – wit was enjoyed by the staff who cared for her while she lived at Plantation Manor. She would roll around the nursing home confused and thinking that she belonged in the Nurses Station with the RNs or that she was still Director of Housekeeping at Riverland Medical Center. In her last few months, she would order staff or residents to clean up their rooms to meet her expectations.
She and Loma were married for 57 years until his death in 2012. After the death of Loma, lonely hours were then filled with four-legged fur baby named “Scooter.” She cherished him until dementia wiped away all memories of her four- legged pride and joy.
Leona “Pug” Guice is survived by two children, DeWayne Guice and wife Jackie of Harrisonburg,, LA, Susanne Delhoste and husband Eddie of Delhi, LA, Five Grandchildren, Vicki Trisler and husband Jake of Jonesville, LA, Nicki Fryer and husband John Randall of Rayville, LA., Mark Delhoste and wife Frances of Shreveport, LA and Miranda White of Monroe, LA. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren. Kennedy Trisler, Lily and Trey Wilson, Slater Wiggins, Madelyn Fryer, Sawyer and Sally Delhoste, Hunter and Logan Smith and Makayla “Dani” Morace. She is also survived by a host of nieces nephews and one living sister-in-law, Pauline "Polly" Guice.
Ms. Guice was proceeded in death by her unnamed infant child and husband Mr. Loma D. Guice, of Sicily Island. Her parents, Mr. W. D. Hackney, Sr., and Mrs. Ora Hackney, from Harrisonburg. Sister, Ora Marie “Doodle” Nugent, Melvin Nugent, and nieces Dianne and Christy of Pollock, LA, a sister Juanita Randall, Charlie Randall, Jr. and son Wayne of Vidalia, LA, a third sister, Marcelle and George Staring of Baton Rouge, and finally one brother, W. D. “Buddy” Hackney, Jr. of Harrisonburg and one granddaughter, Christy Guice of Jonesville, LA.
Pallbearers will be Mark Delhoste, Charles “Chuck” Smith, Charles “Coonie” Coleman, Gary Staring, Bobby Staring, and James Aplin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Trey Wilson, Slater Wiggins, Sawyer Delhoste, John Randall Fryer, Hunter Smith, Logan Smith, and Wayne Randall a deceased nephew.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of Plantation Manor Nursing Home in Winnsboro, LA. "Pug" was a victim of the Corovirus, but her fighting spirit helped her to overcome that just days before her demise. The support, care, and briefings from the professionals at Plantation Manor gave special understanding and comfort to her children during the last few month of her life.
